CONTACT USThe Chester Winter Watch is a revival of a local custom that dates back to the 1400s. Originally, this was the time of year when city officials handed the town keys over to the City Watch—an early version of the police—to keep the streets safe during the holidays. Their job was to patrol the walls and stop any disorder or fires while the city celebrated Christmas.
Today, the event is run as a performance that moves through the city center, mixing historical reenactment with street theatre. It features a specific cast of characters, including the Lord of Misrule and fire skeletons, creating a darker, more traditional atmosphere than a standard holiday parade.
We were on location in Chester to film the 2025 event, capturing the full procession and the performances throughout the evening.
