The Brief

We were commissioned by the Chester Round Table to produce the definitive highlights video for the landmark 50th anniversary of the Chester Raft Race. The brief was to create a high-energy, cinematic asset for distribution across social media channels, and for use in securing future event sponsorship. The core objective was to capture the unique scale, vibrant atmosphere, and community spirit of this milestone event to drive future engagement and participation.

The visual approach required a versatile production capable of documenting both the spectacle and the detail of a dynamic live event. To achieve this, we deployed a DJI Mini 4 drone to capture the epic aerial perspectives of the raft flotilla on the River Dee and the expansive crowds. This was complemented on the ground by our Sony FX6 and FX30 cinema cameras, operated on gimbals and handheld to achieve dynamic tracking shots of the race action and capture the detailed craftsmanship of the rafts and the reactions of the crowd.

The Chester Raft Race is an annual fundraising event organized by the Chester Round Table. The event is centered on a competition where teams, predominantly from corporate and community groups, design, construct, and race homemade rafts along a set course on the River Dee.

The primary objective is philanthropic, aimed at generating substantial funds for designated local and national charities. While the race itself is a key component, the event also emphasizes creativity and spectacle. Rafts are built according to a specific theme that changes annually, and awards are conferred not only for speed but also for categories recognizing design, showmanship, and even the most entertaining sinking.

Functioning as a major community event, the race draws large crowds of spectators to the riverbanks and is typically accompanied by a shoreside festival featuring entertainment and attractions for a family audience.
