CONTACT USWe were commissioned by Soul Kitchen to produce a documentary-style film to mark their 10th anniversary. The objective of the brief was to articulate the core narrative of the charity, communicating its foundational ethos, its operational impact on the Chester community, and its vital role in supporting vulnerable individuals over the past decade.
A key deliverable specified within the commission was the requirement to cohesively integrate the story of their ‘Soul In a Bowl’ and 'Second Bite' initiatives. The ultimate goal of the commissioned film was to create a compelling narrative that encapsulates the full scope of the organisation's work for their anniversary communications.
Nestled in the heart of Chester, Soul Kitchen is a vital volunteer-run organization dedicated to supporting the homeless, those in temporary accommodation, and individuals struggling with the rising cost of living. With a core ethos of fostering community and friendship through food, Soul Kitchen provides a welcoming and non-judgmental environment for those facing hardship. This commitment positions the charity as a crucial frontline service, addressing the immediate and tangible needs of a growing demographic grappling with poverty and social exclusion within the city.
The operational model of Soul Kitchen is centred on the provision of regular hot meals, which act as the primary catalyst for engagement and support. However, its mission extends significantly beyond nutritional relief; the service is fundamentally a platform for building trust, alleviating social isolation, and cultivating a sense of belonging among its guests. By operating entirely with volunteers, the organization ensures that its work is delivered with genuine compassion and a grassroots understanding of the complex challenges faced by its community. The environment is intentionally structured to be a safe and dignified space, free from stigma, where individuals can access not only sustenance but also a vital network of peer support and human connection.
Consequently, Soul Kitchen’s work is instrumental in addressing the profound secondary impacts of poverty, such as loneliness and marginalization. It provides a reliable point of stability for individuals whose lives are often characterized by uncertainty and crisis. By offering this consistent and respectful sanctuary, the charity provides more than just a meal; it offers a foundation from which individuals can begin to rebuild confidence and re-engage with the wider community. In this capacity, Soul Kitchen serves as an indispensable pillar of social support in Chester, championing dignity and reinforcing the principle that community care is fundamental to addressing societal hardship.
This production was anchored by a multi-camera setup to capture the intimate, documentary-style narrative, with the Sony FX6, FX3, and FX30 cinema cameras serving as our primary A, B, and C cameras respectively. This approach allowed for dynamic coverage of the interviews with Helen, Tommy, and Clare, ensuring a variety of emotional and contextual perspectives. For the primary interview angle, we paired the FX6 with the DZOFILM Catta Zoom Cine Lens to achieve a soft, cinematic quality, while the versatile Tamron G2 series and Sony G OSS lenses on the other cameras allowed us to capture detailed cutaways and varied framing. Operator mobility and endurance for capturing extended, fluid handheld sequences were enhanced through the use of a DFCINE camera support vest.
A controlled yet natural lighting environment was established using a combination of Nanlite FS 300B and 60B continuous LED lights, modified with a Godox 95CM Softbox to create a soft, flattering key light on the interview subjects. This ensured a consistent and professional aesthetic throughout the film. Audio integrity was paramount; primary dialogue was captured using a Rode NTG4+ shotgun microphone on a boom, while each contributor was also fitted with a DJI Mic 2 wireless lavalier to guarantee clean, isolated audio tracks. This comprehensive audio strategy was essential for achieving the clarity required for a broadcast-quality documentary narrative.
